Youth, Assignment #5 - Gabriela Basyuk

  1. Hey Gabriela, I decided to do black and white this week as well, I think it adds nicely for dramatic effect. Anyway your family seems like a lot of fun ;), I think you did a great job capturing your neighbors having fun on a hot day. Unleashing the hydrant is an activity I see all the time, and sometimes join in but never take the time to snap a pic, I'm glad you did. I think that all these really describe the block as more of a community than anything else. I love the pictures with the little girl sheepishly photo bombing the frame. The contrast with the two girls posing and smiling and the little girl say so much about their relationship and their personalities. I feel like you are connected to this area from the choice of pictures. My favorite is the hydrant erupting in the air, because it's a really good use of stop motion and it feels like the water droplets pulls the whole picture together with all it's content. The only thing I think could have made these photos even better is the order that they are presented. As I scrolled down looking at each one I was making a story out of the day you captured. I think putting the photos of the moving water before the still puddle left in the street would have made for a more complete story. Overall, very good job completing the assignment.

  2. Hey Gabriela!

First off awesome photos and props to you for walking around Philadelphia on an assumingly hot-enough-to play-in-a-fire-hydrant day, that is commitment!
In regards to the technical aspect you definitely fulfilled all of the assignment’s technical goals. This assignment was a collections of something and I can see the connections between the photos and a collection of the streets of Philadelphia on a hot after school day.
The use of black and white adds to the composition of your photos in a very compelling way. I agree with what Luke said about the dramatic aspect, I especially like in your first photo with the boy walking and his shadow, which I think the black and white accentuate! I think the composition in the second and third photo are less trong than the other ones, but I enjoy the subjects in them, and you did seem to capture the subject’s personalities. The woman looks to happy with her peace signs juxtaposed to the little girl who looks very shy. All of the movement captured in the fourth photo is wonderful, there is so much to look at yet it is not overwhelming and I think the large DOF was a good choice! The Hydrant shots are great too and you really captured all of the fun one can have on a painfully hot summer day!
Overall, these images work together well to create strong visual content! They connect so well through the black and white effect but also the subject matter. Great job!

  3. Hi Gabriela,

I love how you just captured a pure moment of fun in all of these photos. A hot day in a neighborhood, kids playing in the streets, fire hydrants going off; they are the perfect pictures of summer. Making the pictures black and white was a good idea as well, giving the photos a more nostalgic feel to them which really suits these scenes.
The DOF in the first and fourth pictures are nice, it really allows the viewer to get a better look at the neighborhood and the subjects within it. I also like the personal touch in the second and third photos that the subjects give, directly interacting and posing for you; it adds to the fun seen in these photos.
This set of photos completed this weeks assignment perfectly. They are beautiful and work fantastically together, easily depicting the narrative of a great summer day. I'm glad I got to see these great photos.

  4. Your photos this week are absolutely stunning. You were able to capture a moment within each picture, which tells a story by itself. The photos all together go hand in hand with one another as well. The background for the second and third photos make a unique texture and perspective that individually highlight eat subject. The fourth photo is my favorite because you were able to use the large DOF to capture every detail happening at that moment. The fifth photo looks like it belongs right in a magazine. Your choice of black and white in your photos is what make these pictures even more beautiful. The black and white focuses on what is actually in the picture, you complete eliminate all other distractions. I think you did an amazing job!
