DOF Assignment - Courtney Dolan

  1. Helloooooo Courtney! I'm digging the pics and the mixture of environments. My favorite is the dandelion, but I'll go from top to bottom. It was a interesting part of your neighborhood to shoot that feels full of life even though there isn't any people. I think it really draws the viewer in the way the trees and the buildings all seem to travel to the center of your frame. This was a great choice to use Large DOF to really take in everything on this stretch of street, I would maybe watch the lighting more careful next time though it get's a little grainy in your photo and I don't know if you wanted "Katz Pharmacy to be your focal point, but it's at the center of your frame, which doesn't hurt the photograph at all but makes me wonder if it's important. The second photo is great technique for all the reasons. The lighting, perspective, composition, and content are all interesting and well shot. I like how your center object is the dandelion and all around the frame are different stages of the life cycle. The shallow depth enhances the glorification of the fuzzy dandelions texture and detail very well. The tree photo is the nature part of your surroundings I guess, so I'm thinking you live in a suburb with just as much land as their are people and industrialization. The large DOF shows the scale of the forrest area and the green fills the frame well, I'm glad you included the walk in your photo because it reads that you have forests that aren't completely untouched by people and might be an activity to hike in your home area. Your self-portrait is beautifully framed, with a great pose and I really like the curliness of your hair blending into the green of the grass. I think you completed this assignment to the fullest, well done.

  2. Hey Courtney, I really love all your images. i really love the one of the wishy as i call it. Its a great image and i love that all the others around it have lost the peddles i guess and the one you captured is so full. you did a great job focusing fully on the one wishy, you can really see all the detail and its really capturing. I also enjoy the forest shot, i saw myself sitting on a porch and just looking over this area and its a very nice feeling it gives. i feel you did a great job capturing the depth of field i like how the sky helps balance the path and makes the image seam balance. I do enjoy the one of the town but i love the other two, i know there was a lot of light but i feel like some of the detail got lost and all the other images went so well together. It did do a great job showing where you live though so it does work well. I also like you self portrait, it makes me feel like you were embracing the area you were shooting in and really enjoying the project! Good job!

  3. Hello Courtney. I like the mixtures of worlds that you have decided to show us. I think the top urban image is pretty nice. There is a little bit of a ghost town feel which I think is cool. Due to the lights being on and no one around I guess. Thats cool if you know that place as home. I think the dandelion bloom is pretty cool as well. I think the focus is pretty intense,in a good way. The rest of the image is not really clear which then highlights the details of the dandelion. The picture of the forest I think could have used a little more darkness maybe. There is a lot of light and it becomes a little over powering for myself. The last portrait is really great though. Its close and intimate and you did a great job of highlighting your person in a sweet way. Just gorgeous. Great work!

  4. Hi Courtney,

Some really fun explorations here! Your first photo really brings me into this warm summer night stroll. I really enjoyed the lights playing around and dancing around the tree. the scene is a very interesting composition. It looks like an extremely interesting and pleasant place to live. The dandelion is a very sweet short depth of field. Your focus and exposure are excellent. Your second photo is a nice long exposure of a misty and lush wood. I really liked the contrast of this overflow of vegetation and movement contrasted with the still sky. compositionally this is also strong and I liked how the path cuts across on an angle. Your third photo is a really fun glam shot. Your eyes really bring together all the colors in this photo, a little brown, green. I loved the textural quality of the grass behind you. great work!

  5. Hey Courtney! I really enjoyed your photos this week and the variety of images you chose. The first one makes me feel like I am the person walking down that street. I love the large DOF you used and the tinted lightening gives the image a very warm and inviting quality, like this is a little street I would love to sit out on at night. Your second picture was great as well. I like the small DOF and the focus on the dandelion. It was a very interesting in contrast to the several empty stems behind it. In your next two pictures I love the play off of the greenery. The third pictures has great DOF and a very organic flow to it. Also in your portrait I love how your green eyes really pop with the green grass in background. This actually inspired my self-portrait for this assignment, so thank you! Overall very nice work and I look forward to seeing more!

  6. OK first things first, that is an absolute beautiful self portrait. Your eyes are crazy, and the green background stand out at first. But as you look at the photo closely, there is great symmetry. Your dark curly hair makes the green in the background pop. Great photo! The Katz pharmacy sign shows great depth of photo. Its a long look down the street. I like how you brought the dandelion into focus. You show great detail of the dandelion while using dof. You also took a great landscape shot. I like how it looks like jungle in the back yard. I also like how it looks like there is a wall of green, like you can pull back the curtains on the forest. I can honestly say that you have the best collection of photos!
