Luke Shimpeno_Assignment #4 Lighting and Portrait

  1. Whats up Luke? I will say you always come up with some of the most creative photos. The use of the green artificial light in the first photo is well done. Your getting shadows as well as different shapes and glows from the green against the wall in the background. In the second photo I like how the way you used the light makes the girl look very imposing. The shadow in the background makes her look 6 feet tall. I like how she goes from superhero to villain in the photos, or was she always the villain, or is she still the superhero, and your the villain? You and that kitchen knife though. The only problem I can see is that you were suppoose to have 3 different subjects or subject matter.

  2. Hey Luke,
It is clear you had a lot of fun with this assignment. Although very blurry, I enjoyed the green light and the shadows and forms it created. It almost looks as though we are outside near a green pool at night. The perspective of the hand is really fun and im wondering if the composition would have been enhanced if the hand was in focus with more depth of field. Her face is also hard to pin down as far as what she is feeling which makes for an interesting subject. The second third and fourth photo are really fun and a nice series on their own. I can tell you both had a lot of fun doing this. I think the first one is most successful. The shadow is very intentional and creates a story. It is almost like the shadow is not part of her, but a taller, stronger, partner in crime. of course the vibrant pink wig in front of an overall monochromatic environment directs our attention to her. I would have really preferred the third photo be in focus because of the interesting subject matter. Unfortunately it is a little blurry along with the fourth image which detract from your message. It would have been much stronger to see that knife in sharp focus. Right now, it blends in with the wall. Overall the most successful part of these are her shadows. I think they stole the show. Your self portrait is very theatrical operatic and dramatic. Of course the subject is pretty intense and odd but I found the cracked mirror very interesting. Nice work!

  3. Hey Luke! Really cool stuff going on here. I like the choice in subject matter. I think your first photo is my favorite. I love the colorful lighting and how the model's hand looks like it will come out of the photograph and touch the viewer. The lighting has a kind of groovy/psychedelic feel to it haha. The other three photos are really interesting, I like that you chose sharp lighting to cast shadows. I think the shadows in this case can be just as interesting as the subject matter because of how they are cast and their perspective. This series definitely has a whimsical feel to it. Your self-portrait has a dark humor to it, but I like the thought that was put in to it. I also again enjoy the neat shadows it produces on the wall, you don't know which to focus on more because they're both intriguing. You definitely completed all aspects of this assignment. Yay!

  4. Hi Luke! I always look forward to seeing your unique photos. This series was by far your most interesting and abstract. I really like the perspective of the first photo and the green lighting. The next three photos were very interesting as well and I loved the sharp artificial lighting directed onto the subjected. It created some great shadows on the way and gave the images some depth. I also agree with Courtney's comment above that I like the dark humor of the self-portrait. I would have maybe liked to see some of the background cropped out and the image a little more in focus but overall it was very creative and well done! Good work!

  5. Hey Luke,
Wow, these photos are so, as others have stated, unique and you seemed to have a lot of fun with this assignment. The girl reminds me so much of the girl from Kick-Ass, only she kind of seems like a villain in your shot. The composition of these images are all great, I like the use of the white background to accentuate shadows as well as colors! The ballon too is a nice touch, but it kind of throws me off a little with how many colors are going on in it, but how few are going on in the rest. Nonetheless, the shadows in all of these photos are superb, I love how tall and powerful she looks in the second and third photo! The first photo is cool too, I never thought to use colored light as a source, but it makes such an eery and different feel than the others, very mystic.
Your self portrait is great, I love how you continually add you love of horror movies into your homework. The cracked mirror is a nice touch, and the angle of the photo is pretty interesting. It would have been cool to have the people in focus, but putting focus on the cracks just adds dimension to the whole piece. Great work, and your facial expression is very interesting, you don't look as scared or startled as someone else in that situation might be, but whatever works for you I guess, who knows maybe she's just trimming your beard?

  6. Hi Luke,

When I first looked at this, I was impressed with the unique lighting of the first photo. I like the trippy, under water-like scene the green lighting creates around the subject as she reaches out to the camera. Then I moved on to the other pictures, believing I was looking at some poses of maybe a supper hero, the tall shadows behind her kind of adding to that frame of thought. That is until I saw your self portrait and thought, 'Whoa. Maybe not a super hero.' After a second look at the fourth picture only did I realize that the costumed woman was holding a knife along with the balloons. Super hero or not, this set of photos is very creative. And like others have pointed out, you had fun with this assignment.
I would have liked to seen some more of the green lighting used in the other photos, maybe make a theme out of the set. A few of the photos are also a bit out of focus. The clarity would have made these bold pictures even bolder, but they are still great regardless.
Overall, I think you completed this weeks assignment. The creative use of lighting and shadowing was great, and the subjects just as interesting. I look forward to see what you come up with for our last assignment.
