Assignment #4, Brandi Asselin

  1. Hi Brandi,

I have to say, these photos are just breath taking! From the feigned look of shock in the the first person's photo, to the genuine smile of the third photo, these are just great. You obviously picked the perfect days to take photos for the second and third pictures. I particularly like the third picture, the light provided by the sun making the perfect source of lighting. The way the flowers glow is especially beautiful. Your self portrait is cute as well, and very detailed; All the way down to the variation of color in your eye.
The only thing I wish to comment on is that, despite the nice weather, I would have liked to seen some darker shadows to really bring out the photo. But no one can keep the clouds from getting in the way so this picture is still great, regardless of the shadowing. The soft lighting also goes with the sleepy mood of the subject, so more lighting probably would have taken away from that.
I believe you completed this weeks assignment beautifully with very strong photos. Each one is in great focus with nice detail. The lighting in all these photos is good and brings out each subject nicely. I look forward to seeing what you will show for our last assignment before the project.

  2. I agree with Lauren's comment, these are beautiful I especially love the first photograph, there are so many layers and details which creates for a very compelling photograph. I think the lights exposed in the window, make the subject stand out more, and the reflection created by the piano is very clear and detailed. The third one is also great, and I can see you used specular light and the flowers right below the subject jump out because of their color, while the ones in the background are beautifully lit by the sun. I also like the sun reflection on the subjects hair.

  3. Hi Brandi,

Really interesting compositions. Although the light sources do not appear to be the focus or are quite clear besides the one of your friend in the sun, these are still striking compositions. You first photo I found your friends expression very enthralling, it is interesting when a face is more open to interpretation. Your depth of field is excelent, giving us the blurry orbs of city nigh lights outside the window. I really enjoyed the reflections on the piano as well they create some very beautiful forms. Your second photo is very dynamic and i really enjoyed the contrast of his salmon shirt agains the light blue sky. Here the depth of field is also successful and it certainly sparks conversation such as where is he? and why is he lying by the water? this makes your subject all the more interesting. The third image in the field is delightful. You can smell the grass and the warm summer air, I can tell you had fun shooting this. Compositionally it would have been nice to have a little room above her head because it is sliced off at just the top which does not feel intentional. your self portrait is really fun and again, nice shallow depth of field as in the last 3. I really enjoy how we are brought into the frame with your curving headband which has some really cool colors which are repeated throughout the composition of blues deep greens and aquas. your eye also picks up the palette. although light source was not the priority of these photos, really great compositions and great job.

  4. hey brandi,
i love all of your images they are all very interesting. my favorite is the one with the girl and the flowers its such a fun photo and i love how the flowers in the front are blurry along with the background and her face is so in focus. Its a great image over all, i also enjoy the first image it looks like you called his name and he looked over right when u clicked to take the shot. the second image is interesting also and really makes the viewer look and try and figure out the surroundings. overall the lighting of all of them are fun and different, As for you self portrait, one you eyes look so cool, but i love all the green, im gonna guess its your favorite color, but its a very fun image and i really enjoy it, good job!

  5. Hi Brandi! I really enjoy all of your photos and the perspectives you chose to shoot them at. The first composition is great, I like the shallow DOF and blurred background behind him. I like that he's sitting at a piano and that it looks like you took the picture at a lower level than eye level. It looks like it was shot at the level of the piano which I think makes the picture because it creates balance and unity. The second photograph is my favorite because I love the angle you shot it at. The photo is crystal clear and again I like that you it's shallow and he is the focus. I also enjoy the fact that it's shot directly at his head, it creates like a line that helps guide the viewer throughout the photograph. The third one is almost my favorite as well. It's so cheerful with beautiful subject matter! I love the natural lighting and that the model isn't over powered by all of that sunlight. The scenery is gorgeous and it just makes for an overall great composition and photograph. I love your self portrait as well and that you chose to shoot half of your face. I think it adds mystery and enticement in a good way. You most definitely completed the assignment, and your photos were a pleasure to look at. Awesome job!

  6. Hi Brandi! I really enjoyed your photos. I love the artificial lighting in the first one and how it illuminates the entire room. I also like how some of the light is directed and reflected off the piano as well as the blurred lights in the background. The next two photos are great as well with the low DOF and the natural lighting on both of the individuals. Finally I think your portrait is my favorite. I like how the natural light gives it a very soft feel and the DOF is focused on your face. Also, the green comforter in the foreground and green wall in the background really bring out the color of your eyes! Great work!
