Assignment 5: Scaling the Mountain

  1. Hey Jessie! These photos are great, it makes me want to be wherever they were taken! I like how you explored shooting a large DOF and the lighting that was going on during this day. I think the third and sixth photos are my favorite. I like the serene and peaceful quality they evoke due to the light you were able to capture and the perspective you chose to shoot from. I think the first photo is an excellent example of a large DOF because the viewer's eye is drawn back and up the hill to really see how large of a landscape the picture is in. I think your self-portrait is really neat! It's awesome because we get to see the amazing view you were looking at. You definitely completed this assignment, and all of the photos work really well together. Nice job!

  2. Hello Jessie,
You did a job of keeping your focus on one subject, but at the same time giving us different points of view. I like the photo from the sky lift, because it gives you the feel of looking down on the world. The look across the top of the trees is beautiful. I like how you catch the shade on top of the trees. It is a great example of scattered light. I also like the the photo of the sky. It seems like your on your back, and get another great shot of the scattered light through the clouds, but from a different vantage point. The photo of your friend and you gives great DOF in showing how vast the land you are taking photos of is. Where was this at, and what was the sky lift for? Your photos really leave a lot to the imagination. You did a very good job!

  3. Hey Jessie,

Wow, this looks like so much fun and also a great place to create a narrative of something! I’ve never really seen a ski lift during the summer time nor did I know you could climb the mountains, I want to check it out now!
In terms of the technical aspect of this assignment you achieved the goals. You did so by choosing a subject matter, the mountain and creating a narrative about your climb up is and later descent down. These photos are further connected through the colors and incorporation of sky and clouds in each one.
Regarding the craftsmanship of the images, they are all wonderful. I like how you switch between posed photos of people to captured moments of the landscape around you. I think your first photo is a little weaker than the others, but that might have just been that the clouds hid the sun or it might have been fun to play around with camera height and make them appear taller than the mountain or play around with DOF. Nonetheless, I love the intensity of the second photo with the white clouds emitting light on one side and the stand eclipsed in shadows juxtaposing the clouds. The photo at the top with the two people is great too, and shows all the emotions one feels after climbing a mountain. The man throws up his hands in achievement while the woman looks like she is happy but about the fall to the ground. I appreciate how you played around with DOF and capturing moments and what not, definitely seems like you encompassed all of what we have learned this session!
Overall, the technical aspects and the craftsmanship of the images work together to create a strong visual statement about your summer hike up a ski slope. Great job!

  4. The scale of these photos are fantastic. I do not know really where it is but the photos make it into some kind of far off adventure land of sorts.
If order mattered much as it does you did a great job with the portrait first. This gives me a sense of narrative of the adventure. As it starts out as a portrait then gets into these godly landscapes. The second picture is great. The industrial object juxtaposed to the scale of nature is pretty breathtaking. The photos then dig deeper into the natural boundaries. The shot close to the ground is really great in comparison to the ones in the sky and so forth.
    Great job. Keep exploring.

  5. I love how you chose to shoot your photos at an off season ski mountain! You had great DOF, especially in the first photo. The perspective of the mountain trail in the background paired with the people at the base creates a balanced picture that highlights your main subjects. The lighting in the second photo is really beautiful, you did a great job in finding the right angle to shoot your subjects. I like how there is something in the shadows and makes us move in and look at it closer to see what it is. The last two photos are also very beautiful and the DOF is very nice to get all the detail of the trees. You did a great job making use of the ski lift with your amazing photos this week, nice work!

  6. Hi Jessie,

This set of photos is really gorgeous. I love the DOF that is shown in all of them, giving the viewer a great look at the scenery of the mountain. My favorite out of the whole set is the first one, it is a great example of large DOF. It also is a very beautiful and expansive view of the mountain and the how far it goes. The last photo is nice too, another large DOF that captures a subject admiring the view just as the audience admires it.
I'm glad that I got the chance to look at this beautiful set of photos, and all the other photos that you have shown this semester.
