DOF VIII (my new friend, a seemingly far away land, a hard working neighbor, and yours truly.)

  1. I like how you chose to show many different layers in these images as well as their positing in the shot. In the first one, I like how the pathway the skater is going down goes along with the way he's moving, and the shadows from the leaves above create an interesting texture to the whole frame, too. The graffitti one is really awesome because of the layers of paint in the foreground and those in the background. My favorite image is the last one; it reminds me of a Wes Anderson film. The colors are really nice, and it kind of combines all three weeks assignments in one photo (although, I don't know if that's you). The slight blur of the background is nice to frame the subject, but still allow for the eye to see what's behind there too. Great job!

  2. Hi Elliot! Nice series! I think all these images work extremely well together. I am amazed at the clarity of these pictures, because that's something I feel I've been struggling with. I really enjoy the first image because there are a lot of neat shapes coming together from the positive and negative spaces as well as the cast shadows. The second is really cool, and again I like the geometric shapes that are created from the building. This picture looks like it came out of a Tony Hawk video game. The last two images are nice as well because they are very in focus and they are cropped at nice positions to create well balanced pictures. Great work!

  3. Hi Elliot,

Some excellent explorations and compositions here. You brought your photos to a new level. the shadows of your first image have a very painterly quality as they dance across the composition very pleasant. I really enjoyed how the shadows made your friends shirt have several types of red. I also loved the contrast of his red shirt and the green line of grass cutting right across him. your second photo is a beautiful large depth of field. everything is in extremely sharp focus. I was really able to look around at the graffiti and the angles as if I was there. Ruins, especially around here, can be very enchanting. Conceptually I really like how this old factory that was once producing serious products and machinery now is nothing but a graffiti playground. Makes me wonder if all this stuff we buy really isnt worth anything. Your third photo really brought me into this moment. Visually I really liked how your neighbors wiry hair looks like the wires and pipes within the car. great similarity. The last photo is a fun subject matter and I enjoyed the texture of teh smoke as well as the lighting. the yellow light really summons a warm summer night in the city. Great work.

  4. These are great! I really enjoyed the shadows and clarity in the first photo, the pattern of the trees against the floor makes for a really captivating photograph, and the skateboarder really pops against it with his red shirt. I loved the second image because I’m always the lookout for vacant buildings/spots to explore in Philly (graffiti pier is my favorite) so it was interesting to try to imagine where exactly this was taken. I like the definition of the colors in the graffiti against the gray cement, it really makes everything pop in the photo. The third one is a great use of shallow DOF, I like that you can see the little details of the subject's neck and head, while the car is less focus - making the photo direct the attention to the subject itself. The self-portrait is neat, I like that you captured it mid-smoke, it added a certain easy-going vibe, and I think the details such as the shirt, beer and hat accentuate that.
