Assignment 4 - Light & Portraits

  1. Courtney! Like the pics. Out of the top three it's hard to decide which one is my favorite. I can hear Jason Mraz and Death Cab while viewing your photos. The top one has a great use of diffused lighting from the smoke, it really adds to the composition. I also liked the tight frame around the subject with a little out of focus brick in the background. It is a formal relaxed portrait. I like the second one as well good use of specular lighting especially on her cheek it gives her a really enchanting glow, almost mystical. Her stare is phenomenal and i really like the composition of the grass protruding around her arm. Having her hair cover one eye is as playful as it is a bit mysterious. The third picture is another great specular use of lighting and this ones framing is really pleasant. The composition is really great with the dark forest behind the subjects, and the decision to have them collapsed, and folded over each other is great. It makes the eye really engage in the photo. I think the decision to have one looking into camera and one at the sky makes the emotion of the photo a lot more dynamic. The fourth photo I think could have been as strong as the others if you had taken it completely perpendicular to the subject. The angle that your showing is looking into the nostril of the subject and kind of distracting, especially since the background is out of focus. Your portrait is lovely and alluring definitely environmental and I like your immersion into the surrounding plant life. It is like you are welcoming viewers into the forest. Overall great job completing the assignment keep up the good work.

  2. Hey Courtney,
Some really fun compositions here. It is clear you had a lot of fun with this assignment as well which is awesome, you really captured a lot of joy of these moments. the first pictue is interesting how the man/womans face is being obstructed by the whsipy smoke. His/her blue shirt really pops against the brick background. The second photo, which appears to be a zoom in off a variation of the third photo is very nice, however seems arbitrary when put side by side with your third image because it is essentially the same. I think the photographs of your two friends together is much more successful than the singled out shots. The palette on your third image is very summery and there flopping soft forms only adds to the composition of the a beautiful whimsical summer day. Compositionally, I think it is cropped a little close to the girl in the white's head and a little more space would have felt a little more intentional. your depth of field is also successful due to the contrast of the green. In the foreground we have a lighter yellower green and the background a blurry dark green very nice. Your self portrait is very flattering and the composition is really nice. the whimsical quality of your ice cream cone shirt adds an element of fantasy to your portrait in front of this lush green backdrop. Overall great work!

    1. Hey Alex! I'm mad at myself because it looks like the single photos of my friends is just a zoomed in shot of them together, however that's not the case. Their single shots were separate from that together shot as the girl in the white has a different facial expression in each. Thanks for your critique!

  3. I like how you not only utilized natural light, but you knew how to place your subjects to best absorb that sunlight. The first one is interesting because the smoke almost acts like a shadow to cover half of your subject's face, which I find very artistic. The second one is perfectly cropped. Her facial expression seems very natural and intriguing. I can even see the sun lightly shinning through the holes of her sweater and highlighting her face beautifully. I like how in the third picture you uniquely placed your subjects. Although the girl in white is the main focus, the girl in blue seems to place a significant role in the photo. The light outlining your subject's profile in the fourth photo shows that you positioned her to specifically catch the light. The angle is also interesting , leaving people to wonder what is going through her mind. Your self portrait also is a great example of positioning the subject to catch the light. The bright green background behind you makes your hair stand out. Beautiful pictures this week, I really loved your ability to direct your subjects!

  4. Hi Courtney! I really enjoyed your series of photos and the natural lighting you used throughout. It really brought out the greens and blues of the landscape. I like the smoke in the first photo and how it diffuses some of the light and creates a haze around the image. I also agree with the comment above that I really liked the angle and perspective of the other photos. It really illuminated the subjects and grabbed the viewers attention. Finally your self-portrait is very nice. The natural green background created a very nice backdrop and really made your image pop! Great work!

  5. Hi Courtney... nice photos! I love how you start off with a close-up view in the first few shots, then you gradually start including more of the person in the frame once you reach your self portrait at the end. It's a nice narrative progression. I also like how the colors are very consistant and uniform across the whole spectrum of shots you took. I think for the first image, maybe including more of the smoke coming from his mouth would make for a more interesting composition, rather than having his entire face almost fill the frame. Since you seem to be exploring natural light, I wish you would have pushed that little more on your self portrait... maybe find a more dynamic light source/spot outside, like half of your face could be shaded, or have the sunlight coming through leaves cast a cool shadow... something a little more interesting. But overall, great job.
