  1. Hi Alisa! I love the subject matter you chose to shoot. The first image for me is my favorite. I love the perspective that you chose to shoot, it's very well focused. The composition is amazing as well because the angle you chose to capture creates a nice unified balance for the entire piece. I think the second image works well too, I just perhaps would have focused on one cactus to really get the effect of a shallow DOF. Right now I think the other cacti distract the viewer from solely focus on one, however that may have been your intention! I really like the third image as well. I think it's interesting subject matter shot from a really cool angle. It creates like, an abstract piece of art. It also makes me rethink the way I look at pushpins. Your final image I love because it's a nice shot of the skyline. The only suggestion I would make would be to crop some more of the sky out so that the focus is more on the buildings and the scenery rather than the sky. Great job!

  2. Hi Alisa!

Some really nice explorations here. your first photo is such an iconic shot that a really enjoyed. Nice low depth of field of having the bottom of the net in ficus and nicely transitioning to slightly blurrier. I love the contrast of the red rim with that blue sky. I also like that the lighting really abstracts the light on the net that is more out of focus and almost looks like a painting or how you would paint the harsh light/dark shadows on the net. Your second photo has a charming subject matter. Another great low depth of field exploration. Compositionally, I like how you bring us into your photo by the curve of the flower pot. the out of focus areas also remind me of a painting with the strong light and dark contrasts. technically i would have liked to see the highlight of the cactus darkened just a little so we could see the detail in the sunlight. your third photo is a fun composition but I found the focus a little jumbling. although there are several pins focussed on, my eye was moving a little speratically and I was not sure where to focus- but i really enjoyed your color contrast. Your last photo is very honest and an excellent large depth of field. Technically I would have cloned stamped that little fuzzy black spot out of the sky and also cropped the sky down an inch. But overall very nice! Great work!

  3. Hey Alisa! I really enjoyed the variety of images you chose for this assignment. The first photo is definitely my favorite. So often we see pictures of basketball nets straight on or looking down through them but rarely from the vantage point you chose. I love how the color of the rim contrasts with the sky and that the very bottom of the the net in the foreground is in focus. In the second photo I found the subject matter to be very interesting and there was a lot for the viewer to take in that couldn't be done at one quick glance. I like the the cactus in the foreground is in focus and how the natural sunlight reflects off of it. I also like that as your eyes transition into the slightly burred background there is still more to discover. It gave the photo a lot of depth! The thumb tacts on the wall were also a very interesting choice, but I agree with Alex above that I was not totally sure where to focus my eyes. In the last photo I like the large DOF of the city and urban feel of it. I also agree with the comments above that I would have cropped out a bit of the sky, but overall great work!

  4. I like the creativity of the photo under the hoop. You were able o bring the net into focus, while keeping the rim out of focus. That was a good shot< as well as the cactus photo. I found it hard bring the pic into focus on 1 object and you did it well in both photos. The board pins was different, because of how you took the photo from the side. It gives the board pins a different look. I'm at loss for the word that describes look, but when you first see the pick I don't see board pins. I like how you used objects to give you a different look than what they are. Your missing a self portrait though, i would have loved to see what creative idea you would of had.

  5. Great job with this assignment and technically speaking you satisfied all of this assignment's goals in really interesting and creative ways! I can see which are the Shallow DOFs and which is the Large and I think you did well to incorporate what the powerpoint said in regards to which images to have shallow and which large. You show very different aspects of where you live which is cool because it gives the viewer a lot more information than what would have been from three photos of very similar subjects.
Great craftsmanship. The compositions are all very strong, and you looked for photos in such creative ways, I would never have thought to look up at a basketball net. It's contrasts with the flat colored sky in such a lovely way. The cactus and succulents are are great, I used to work in a greenhouse and would always messes with the arrangement of succulents, great photograph of them! The rooftops are so nice and great timing. I really like the sky also and the clouds!
You did a great job and made a strong visual statement about where you live. The photographs range so much and give a lot more depth about where you come from. Great job!

  6. Wow! I really love the variety of these. The first one has great focus, I love how you were able to keep the bottom of the net in focus and very sharp, while the rim and the sky are pushed out, making for a really powerful image of such an simple object. I really enjoyed one because I’ve been on an extreme succulent kick myself, and I love looking at other people’s collections of plants. I like the way the sun hits the cactus symmetrically, making it the star of the photo, while the further plants are out of photos – giving it definition. The third one jumps out because of the colors of the puns against the fall, and I like the sharpness of the pins in the back versus the ones closer to the viewer. The fourth photo shows a great use of large DOF, and I like the drastic contrast of the color of the sky and the city itself, it looks like the sun is hitting every building in Philadelphia I really enjoyed that.
