The Children

  1. Hey Jonathan, you got some future models in your hands. Your kids provide a lot of personality for your narrative assignment. I think that you are not only telling your story from the perspective as a father, but are showing their individual personalities well. My favorite is definitely your little girl giving the serious mug to the camera, this one has great framing for the pose she is striking. Your photos have a really nice dynamic of emotions from serious to funny, relaxed, and happy. It really captures the life of your children well full of energy and personality. A couple of the photos (your girl lying down, and the porch shots) could have benefited I believe from being framed a little tighter to keep the focus on the expression and emotion coming from your children. I like that you went from a downward perspective to getting on the level of your children. It makes a great way for the viewer to see who's perspective we are taking. I think black and white was also a good choice, since we see pictures of children mostly in color, it allows me to be able to view the picture in a more artistic/honest way rather than making the photos seem like everyday family photos. Overall, good job completing the assignment;

  2. Hey Jonathon,

    Aw this looks like such a fun photoshot with your kids and I agree with Luke that you have some serious future models on your hands! In regards to the technical aspect of the assignment you fulfilled the goals through giving the viewer a collection of images of your children!
    In regards to craftsmanship, I think these images are well done! The black and white connects them even more than the subject matter does, but I will say at times I wish the contrast was a little greater, like in the second photo because if you come the lighting in that to the fifth photo, you can see how much contrast the second one lacks. Nonetheless, it’s compositionally a great shot but my favorite would have the be the first one, there is something so candid about it yet so posed at the same time and I love them on the porch with the background. This photo gives a great sense of their personalities as well as how they interact with one another. I love the contrast and light on her face of the fifth one, great shot! The sixth photo is great again with the capturing of a moment and does not look like the posed but more they were running down the stairs and you snapped a picture as they turned the corner and their princess outfits are awesome!
    Overall, the technical aspects and craftsmanship of these images work together to create a strong visual statement about your family, specifically your kids. Great job and looks like you had fun taking these photos!

  3. Your photos this week are all really amazing. You made great use of everything from natural light and different angles. The choice of black and white also compliment each photo in it's own way. The first photo I liked how you got up and shot down on them. You paid close attention to the staging of your subjects and framed it nicely. The fifth photo is absolutely beautiful. You had your subject at exactly the right angle under the perfect amount of sunlight to softly pull out the details of her face and body. The shallow DOF also provides a nice touch. The 9th photo is another beautiful picture showcasing your amazing use of natural sunlight and also staging your subject in a way to catch the light while remain the main focus of the entire photo. Really great work, I really enjoyed all these photos this week!

  4. Hey Jonathon, I really love your set of photos this week. Portraits are my favorite form of photography, and I think you really captured the essence of the children and their personality’s in these photos. I especially enjoy the first shot, the black and white was a great choice to add to the moody-ness of the set and the use of the large DOF provides a great composition. I like your use of light, and contrast throughout the set, the fifth photo is also really beautiful – in the way you caught the light reflecting the child’s hair and face. Number 9 is another powerful shot, the light hitting the subject is very subtle but powerful, making a really captivation photograph. Overall, these are the best photos I’ve seen this week, great work!

  5. Hi Jonathon,

    It looks like you and your kids had fun taking these pictures; and it's easy to tell by looking at all of their different poses that they obviously love having you take pictures of them. The use of black and white was a good choice, it really brings out all the highlights in the photos and adds a dramatic touch. The fifth and the ninth pictures are my favorite out of the set , they seem the most natural out of all of them. The ninth one especially looks like you took the picture when your son was in a moment of deep thought.
    I think this set would be even more beautiful if there were more natural pictures. The ones of you children posing for the camera are nice, especially the first one where they are perfectly positioned to make an almost symmetric photo. But to have seen some photos of just them playing without knowing the camera was there would have been interesting.
    Overall, however, you completed this weeks assignment perfectly. These photos are a great narrative of your kids and their little personalities that show through their pictures. You did a great job this semester, and I'm glad I got to see your photos.
