Assignment #4 - Light/Portrait

  1. Hi Christine! Great images! I'm assuming you drew your inspiration from the Jason Mraz Happy- Light section because these images rely a lot on natural light. The series is great as a whole and I feel like these photographs could most definitely be used in a catalog! I like that the sun is casting an all over light without hard shadows (aside from the woman wearing a hat) and that you had your models sit in a partly shaded area so it's not direct light. The third photograph is my favorite, I love how you sort of framed the image by having the models sit under a canopy structure. It's a beautiful setting and it's a great composition because everything seems to be balanced. I also like the second photo and how you really focused in on your friend so that the background is blurred, using a shallow DOF. The first photo looks like it could be for American Eagle or some happy clothing line, the lighting is awesome and their poses really fit the overall intention of the photograph. And lastly, I love your self-portrait! It is so natural and it too works well with this series. Awesome job!

  2. Hello Christine, very sunny beautiful pics. I'm guessing your not a fan of the indoors either :). I would definitely say that you went with Jason Mraz as your theme for this assignment. Nothing but fun and good feels emerge from your photos. Going from the top down I like the diffused lighting and the lack of any hard shadows in the frame make me think that it was a perfect blissful day. A really great moment in the shade to capture. I think that if you would have gotten a higher frame on your human subjects it would have made a stronger composition and exposed more of the landscape behind them especially the large tree that provided you with the shade for this type of environmental portrait. The second one is another great portrait using the same technique as the first. The hat gives you a great shadow for your subject and I like the tight framing with a glimpse of an enormous background. It has a very leisurely tone. The third photo is probably my favorite. The angle of the shot has a really cool perspective since it isn't directly in front of the terrace/archway. It's like you had stumbled in on a very intimate moment in a way from being off centered to them. I also really love how the sides of the structure create a frame around them with your own framing, it's a cool way to show a picture outside of the picture. Your self portrait uses diffused lighting well and makes me think your kind of hiding/modeling at the same time because of the leaves behind you. That may just be me though ;). Overall great job completing the assignment and sticking to the theme of the Jason Mraz song.

  3. All your pictures this week are beautiful! I like how you chose a perfect day to utilize the natural sunlight. The first photo shows the genuine laughter of your subjects. Having them in a more shaded area with the sunlight in the background creates a great sense of scenery. The only thing that I would suggest is cropping the bottom of the photo so there is not so much space of grass distracting from your subjects. In the second photo I like how the sun shines through her hat and onto her face. The third photo is perfectly framed, even within the picture itself. The arch keeps the focus on your subjects. The sunlight reflecting off of all the white also makes the photo pop and draws attention to viewers. Awesome pictures this week, you really know how to capture your subjects beautifully!

  4. Hi Christine! I agree with Brandi that I love your theme of natural sunlight. It gave each of the images a very soft light feeling and created a very nice series. I like the various depths of field in each photo. My favorite is the second one and how the sunlight along with the hat create some great subtle shadows and make the viewer feel like they are standing right there in the field. I also really enjoy your self-portrait and the use of the green leaves and how they help shape your face and draw attention to the right side of the image. Great work!

  5. Hey Christine,
I love your theme and I can definitely see similarities in the powerpoint and what you choose to do for this assignment. The first photo looks right out of a magazine for JCrew! I love how you played with natural lighting and seemed to really capture some beautiful moments. It seems like you are making a point that it does not matter whom you are with, a friend, yourself, or significant other, as long as you are in a beautiful setting nothing can get you down!
You used natural light so efficiently and effectively! All of your shots came out great, and the only thoughts I would have is switch up vertical vs. horizontal frames or play around with the shape of pictures! But great job and I cannot wait for next weeks assignment!
