PORTRAITURE + LIGHTING

  1. Hey Alisa, I'm not sure what song you were going for in your photos this week, but my favorite would be the phone lighting picture. I think it is an image that we are involved in a lot and see others in but rarely take the time to capture it. It also has a kind of nostalgic feeling of playing with flashlights in the dark as a kid. I think technically this was your strongest I like the contrast of the surrounding darkness with the light from just the phone itself. Your second strongest would be the second close-up of the girl. I think the blurred background really makes you focus on her eyes which have a type of beautiful sadness to them. I like your framing in this one and I believe the specular light, gives the presence of this girls relation to the world as just another face, but because you took her photo she stands out. I think your self portrait could have been better, it seems like you just missed the picture, the negative space in between doesn't really do much for me. Your top photo is a little blurred and I would have liked to seen what she was doing as well. Overall, I think you completed the assignment, but could have done better on a couple of your pictures.

  2. Hi Alisa! I think you captured some really great portraits of, I'm assuming, your friend. I like that in the first picture she is looking down, it adds interest to the piece. I also like the fact that she is wearing a red sweatshirt against a green background, because they are complimentary colors. Whether intentional or not, it makes the model pop and stand out. Your second photo is really great, I think it's an excellent example of shallow DOF. The composition is perfect in that the model is in the center and main focus with a balance of negative space a round her. Your second photo is definitely my favorite. I like the third as well because it's very cool. I like the fact that you chose lighting from a cellular device, it gives me the sense that it's a metaphor for our technology-based society today (even if that's not what you were going for). I agree with the previous comment, I wish you were included more in your self-portrait. I want to see you! I think it could have been more successful if you had cropped out a lot at the top, as it seems to bottom heavy, and included yourself more. But I do think you completed the assignment!

  3. I really like the choice you made this week to change up the stereotypical portrait shots. In the first one, I like how the colors contrast each other, but it seems a little flat. A light in between the subject and the wall would have add more depth to the picture and made your subject pop even more. The second one is a beautiful close up and the blurred colors in the background makes your subject stand out even more. The only problem I had with this picture is that the focus seems to be on her covered eye, which makes her face sort of fuzzy. I think if her whole face was in focus it would make the entire picture feel more polished. I really enjoyed the third picture. The harsh light casts nice, harsh lines and shadows on the subjects face. Although you probably wanted the viewers to noticed the cell phone, I think this picture could be much stronger if it was cropped out. Great job this week with playing around with different lighting in different environments!

  4. Hey Alisa,
I like how all of your images capture a person close up, but in a completely different setting. I love how close you got to the model/ you friends as well as how you played around with different poses and levels of involvement with the camera. For example the first and your portrait seem to have an air of not even knowing there is a camera, whereas the second and third image stare at the viewer dead on, just an interesting take. I would have liked a more dramatic flare to some of the photos with shadows or focus, just because some of the photos are a little out of focus and others just do not have on thing pulling forward but they still are great and so nice to look out. I like the contrast between the green wall and red sweatshirt in the first one.
I think your self portrait is a little out of place, but as someone who hates taking pictures of herself, I can see why maybe you choose that, or maybe what you are looking at is the other three photos (trippy?). Anyways, great job and I cannot wait to see more!

  5. Hi Alisa,

This is a nice set of photos. The first two are lovely pictures of the subject looking away and then directly at the camera; the backgrounds in each also help to make the subject stand out beautifully, completely making her the main attention of the photo. The third photo seems to complete this weeks assignment the most out of the set. The stark lighting bringing out your friends face in the dark room makes for a great light portraiture.
I like the different take you used for your self portrait, but I think a little less negative space would have made it stronger. Maybe zooming in to cut all of it out and make you more of the center of the photo would help.
Other than that, you completed this weeks assignment. Each photo is a nice portrait with varying sets of lighting that was used in each of them. I look forward to what you will do for our last assignment.
