ISOLATION CREATURES

  1. Hi Alisa,

Really some interesting shots here, some much better than others but the stand outs are awesome. My top 3 are the two cats and the lone fence. Compositionally and conceptually these are the strongest by far. Your first photo really captures the sensitivity and delicacy of the small kitten all alone. Her eye is absolutely tragic. Such a cute, innocent kitten ravaged by the landscape around her yet despite her injury she still is adorable and has the potential to be loved. It is a really interesting comment on not just kittens, but people brought up in terrible conditions and how we are partially a product of our surroundings. Partially meaning there is always potential for more good. I really feel for the kitten hiding behind garbage cans which Im sure it calls home. The fence is truly captivating because of the one design that you would expect to be repeated, yet stands alone. The other kitten picture has a great space and very dynamic with your angles. Your self portrait- it would have been nice to have been focused on something. Your first self portrait was successful due to your choice of focus, (the hair around your ear). This one however, seems intentional but not exactly successful because it is just a photo of you completely out of focus. It would have been nice to see something in focus to add interest and contrast to the low depth of field. But overall, interesting pics!

  2. Hey Alisa,

Interesting photos here, I can see you stayed true to the assignment and went out to make a collection of somethings.
I agree with Alex above in that some of the shots are much stronger than others, but once again I appreciate how you connect these images through the isolation of the subject matter in different locations, which differs from many of us who choose to have a central location and take photos narrating that. In regards to the technical aspect of the assignment you fulfilled the goals. I can see a clear subject matter. This is definitely a collection of things, so kudos!
In terms of craftsmanship of the images some of them definitely are stronger than others and while I appreciate the direction you took, I am at times slightly thrown off by the photo that is very out of focus as well as the single black and white photo. Granted, I think the black and white photo is lovely with the gate reaching above the frame; however, it just seems a little out of place. Yet I like how in it the shallow DOF you choose. I also like the images of the cats, and the first one nearly broke my heart with it’s eye… but I like how hidden the cat is, and wonder how you came to notice that cat there because I would assume others walking by would unlikely see the cat. I like your third photo with how out of place the stuffed animal is. It makes me laugh and I like how the colors work together with the background.
Overall, great job, you created a strong visual statement about individual objects/ creatures in different situations and locations that as different as they are, are able to come together for this narrative!

  3. Hi Alisa. Awesome pictures! I think your theme is great and can be expanded into all kinds of other ways that we act in today's day in age. By making puppets act as creatures they act as a euphemism for humans possibly. The picture of the cat gives a deep sense of vulnerability. I would say that there is a great sense of scale in that picture. I also like how the portrait is also not able to be identified so easily. Making yourself as an isolated creature as well. Great work and great use of props.

  4. I really liked how you played with depth of field this week. In the first photo, the blurred trash bin on the left creates a perspective of where that cat is and how small it is. The cat is the focal point and all the background matter compliment the subject in a unique way. The second photo is a bit blurred but the photo with domo is really amazing. The doll is perfectly placed and the shallow DOF makes the entire photo come together beautifully. The black and white photo through of the fence is really nicely shot and creates a sense of wonder where you are and the type of place it could be. Great job with creating unique photos with different perspectives and angles!

  5. Hi Alisa,

I like how you kept a bit of a theme to this "isolation creature" photo set. You could have taken pictures of various subjects in isolated areas, but instead kept a close similarity to what the subjects were. Cats and stuffed toys. Even though the third picture falls out of this theme of cats and toys, it is still aesthetically pleasing and you kept it in a sense of isolation to stay within your main theme. I especially like how the vine reaches over the gate like it is preparing to wrap around it. I also like the different approach you took with your self portrait. The blurry-ness of it gives off this mysterious approach to showing the audience who you are.
The only thing I want to comment on is how the second photo is a little out of focus. I would have liked to have seen a clearer version of it.
Despite that, I believe you accomplished this weeks assignment. These photos area great and create a good narrative of catching subjects in areas that have no other persons to distract attention from them. I'm glad I got to see this set of photos and all of the other photos you have taken this semester.
