Assignment #4, Gabriela Baysuk

  1. Hey Gabriela, I think I hear Foster the People this week in your assignment, which goes well with the black and white photos. My favorite is the man in front of the England flag (who I've met before and can't remember his name) is your best one. I like that you took the color out of the photo with the black and white, I like the position of him and the choice to have him look off camera. This photo could have been taken with direct light or flash, I am not sure but it is very well done. Your top photo I think would have been stronger if the brick wall was the whole background, instead of the Jeep Cherokee that intrudes on your portrait. The third and fourth also do a nice job, with the lighting, but I think tighter frame would have eliminated the head space above them giving you a more direct subject for your portrait. Your self Portrait is one of the best I've seen from you this week, I really like the black and white choice here, it makes your skin and dress contrast really nicely in a interesting way, I also think that taking the color away from the brick gives it an edgier vibe, which I dig. Overall, great job this week completing the assignment.

  2. Hello Gabriela, I am a big fan of black and white photos too. I like the simplicity of your collection of photos. Its like you want us to see the subject with out any interruption from the background. The photo of you at the bottom is a great example. Its just you and the brick wall, but it makes you stand out. It make your smirk, stance and hair stand out. All I have to focus on is you. The photo of the man on the stoop stands out to me as well. Its the only photo with a background to take notice of. There is something about a black and white photo with the city or neighborhood in the background. With no color or identifying land marks, this photo could be in any city in the country. Your outdoor photos are a great use of natural light. You cant tell from which direction the light is coming because of the use of black and white. I believe that you did a good job with this assignment.

  3. Hey Gabriella,
These photos are HIP! you really gave us a window into the faces and places you associate with. Although the type of light and direction of light is not clear, these photos still are very successful with their subject matter and compositions. The first photo the most interesting thing is the man's expression. It is certainly hard to pin point and is almost eerie because of that. It is also interesting you revealed "around the corner" of the building. Your second photo i think is your most successful because it appears as both staged, but also a candid. It creates an interesting dynamic when a photo could have had every inch intentionally, or quickly snapped with a phone. Either way that questioning makes the photo successful. You can feel the hot cramped room of a summer hangout. Your fourth photo has a great depth of field and leads our eye directly to him. The reflections ont eh windows are also really interesting. Nice work!

  4. hey gabriela, i love the black and white and feeling of all your photos. i also love how simple these are and they have a very old school feel to them. I really like the one of the man in the white shirt, its almost like a flash back photo that looks like an older style. i also enjoy the one with the man in front of the flag the composition and contrast are great it almost frames him in a way. your self portrait fits very well with all the images, i feel like the black and white was a great choice yet again. overall the entire feel of the assignment is great, good job!

  5. Hi Gabriela, great photos! I like the monochromatic color scheme of your photos and the simplicity of each. I like how the first two use artificial lighting, creating nice highlights on each of the individuals faces. I also love the natural lighting the the last two and the larger DOF that you used for both. Your black dress against the brick well and contrasted with the concrete sidewalk created some really nice dynamics to the photo. Overall, nice work!

  6. Hi Gabriela,

These are a beautiful set of photos. Good choice in making them black and white, it really gives them a more aesthetic look. I really like how natural these photos are, like they could easily be pictures found in a photo album. I particularly like the second and third photos for the highlights seen in them, it makes them stand out the most. I also like how casual your self portrait is; very simple and relaxed like a picture taken during a lazy Sunday.
I think you accomplished this weeks assignment beautifully. These photos are great and made even greater through the black and white filter. I can't wait to see what you will show everyone for the last assignment.
