Clarke Godfrey, Assignment #3

  1. Hey Clarke, I like your photo's your self portrait reminds me of the karate kid/titanic :). Your first photo uses the Large DOF technique which I think was a good decision, but the cars are a little bit overwhelming for me. There in the road, they fill the parking lot, and the Starbucks and other scenery is crammed in behind them. If this is what you were intending well done. The second photo uses great shallow depth and I think the one fallen number was a really nice touch. It gives off a tone that makes the address seem like a tomb stone in a way since it is in front of the tree and a rock before it. If this was not your intention i do not mean to offend, I do love horror and think this would have been a really cool black and white as well if you were going for a more macabre feeling. The third picture is the total opposite, beautifully framing the hammock by the stone wall of the house, and the pillars. This is my favorite and a great use of large depth, it captures a leisurely paradise that is at the tip of your home with a beautiful forest to look at. I feel like I can even feel the breeze in this one. The last as I mentioned reminds me of "The Karate Kid" when he goes into the flying crane, I think the picture itself is really cool, but I think you strayed off the assignment a little bit when it comes to DOF. The black and white makes makes it feel very flat because you are so illuminated while your background is completely black. The light in the distance does hint to depth but could have been better if the background had more detail. Other than that, everything was done very well and I believe you completed the assignment nicely.

  2. Cool photos! I keep getting drawn to the porch image, it reminds me of how much I love the countryside! I think the first image is a bit busy, maybe if you were going for that huge depth of field effect you should have included more cars or less, and more of the surroundings like the sky and trees around the building. The porch one is awesome— the foreground is nice and in focus, and it gets deeper as you look past the hammock. A great way to show the concept. In the last image, I like how you chose to basically eliminate the background, so it's super shallow in depth, but a really nice change of imagery. Good job!

  3. The first picture reminds me of some adbuster kinda work. I think all it needs is some word like consume in italics over it or something.
Just kidding but really a great picture showing humanity and really our time and place. With so many cars it does become a bit much and not really sure what you trying to get at. In a way seems like a reminder to not get lost in the kog of going to start bucks and Driving my mercedes. I think the tower is my favorite part of that photo.
The 207 photo is killer! it has a good weight to it. It even gives me some kinda Ammitiville feel to it. With the way the picture was taken, and its clarity it reminds me of something that would be set up which is cool. I mean to express it has a feeling of familiarity that I think is probably common amongst viewers.
The trees not being completely in focus is pretty cool as well, in the hammock photo.
Your portrait is pretty funny. I adore your jesus like pose. The phone and the black and white gives it some erie illuminati feel. Keep up the good work!

  4. The 207 photo is one of the best pics that i have seen all day. The numbers are big and in complete focus. Then the size of house it represents is represented well even though it isn't in focus. Both objects look larger than life. The porch photo stands out to me as well. It looks so comfortable and peaceful. You make me want a hammock. I like how the trees in the background give you great depth of photo. Is that a dance move that you are trying to hit in your self portrait? The blurry white smudges at the the bottom of the photo, make me curious about where you are, and what you are doing. And that is the job of a photo, to get the viewer to think and imagine.

  5. Hi Clarke,

Your set of photos is wonderful and I believe that you completed this weeks assignments. Like everyone else has commented, the second photo is my favorite. It is a perfect example of shallow dof. The close up of the 207 is really detailed right down to the little pineapple on it. I also like how one of the number plaques is backwards and that you didn't fix it. It gives the photo a little more character, like the address sign has been there for a long time. I also like you self portrait, it gives off this free spirit type of vibe. The way your shorts and hair just melds into the night sky background is cool too.
I would have liked to have seen a wider span shot for the first photo, maybe get a little more scenery into the shot. Besides that, however, this is a good example of large dof that still captures a scene that I am sure describes the place were you live. I feel the same for the third photo, but maybe making the span of it bigger would have taken away from it. It is a very peaceful photo that does a good job spanning out vertically rather than horizontally, which I believe is another way to do large dof. Not only that, but it is very clear and beautiful, and everything within it is kept in focus.
Overall, you did a great job in this weeks assignment. Each picture is beautiful and very well detailed. I'm glad I got the chance to see the different ways you view where you live. I look forward to what photos you will take during the rest of this semester.
