Assignment 4, Light/Portraits: Jessie Koontz

  1. Greetings Jessie! I'm going to jump right into it. My favorite photo for you this week is the chess board portrait. The chess board I think is your best quality compositionally as well as content wise. I think that this was a interesting choice to do in black and white and it was framed well. The chess board shows up nicely and I like the way the darkness of her hair frames her face. I would say she is in trouble though since she only has her knight left :). It looks like the technique that you chose for all your images was a direct light so making it black and white was a good choice when working in doors I believe. Your other portraits other than yourself I think could have been framed better. The one of the woman (Mother?) captures a really great expression on her face and the directional light makes a really good contrast that makes a nice gradient shadow over her body. I think for me because the light has a very harsh curvature to it that it makes it look in a way like an interrogation type light, and her hands are a little distracting in the bottom corner. I think a tighter frame, or a wider frame to include her hands would have been better. The one of the man in the chair (father?) I think has a little awkward framing he is off to the right leaving the majority of your photo the chair and the wall. I don't know if this was intentional, but I think if we could see what activity he is doing that is making him pucker his lips would have been interesting to see. I feel the way it is framed is only giving us a part of the picture you were trying to capture. The self portrait is very cute and really makes you concentrate on your expression. I think that the soft shadows that are cast off your face work well, and have a warmer soft feeling that go well with your smile. Overall I think you completed the assignment nicely, but I couldn't figure out what song you were going with.

  2. Hello Jesse. The first thing i want to say is the use of black and white in your photos makes them stand out. The portrait of you smiling is the best photo of the group to me. It seems like you are genuinely happy. It seems that the photographer caught you at the perfect time. The light coming from on direction is also a style I like and tried to use myself. I love how it hides the other side of your face, not that there is anything wrong with the other side, lol! The photo of the chess board is the next to stand out to me. Its a great shot. Her face looks so relaxed and natural. There is something about black and white photos that give a look of authenticity. The photo at the to[p is a good pic too. As I said earlier, the use of light to help hid aspects of the photo is a style that I love. Its like you don't want to give it all to them. You want to leave something to the imagination. I also like it how that style makes it seem as if the subject in the photo is stepping into the light for the world to see.

  3. Hey Jessie,
Each week you are improving and having a lot of fun and that is what this is about! excellent work. You really stuck to the assignment and made the light sources all different and also interesting. your first image of your mom? is really well done. the shadows along her face and form really make for a striking composition. You also have her face perfectly in focus – great job! I love how the lighting makes for a dark and brooding picture, but is shattered by your moms smile. Really conceptually interesting contrast. Your second picture is a really nice pause. Great depth of field as well. We are able to focus on your friend and her chess piece as she decides to make the next move. Your cropping is very intentional and well done. A very nice balance of positive and negative space. the Third photo of your dad? is a really ambitious composition. I really would have loved for the space between your dad and the frame equal to the edge of the chair on the left side of the picture due to the composition being already off balanced in an interesting way. the shadow from his face created by the directional light makes for a very interesting form. Your self portrait is really playful and fun! the use of the flash or the directional light is really well done. the cropping here is also very intentional. Great work overall

  4. hey jessie, i love all of your images, i like that you chose to go with the black and white it makes you images really stand out and get them a really good feeling. The top images is my favorite i love the use of lighting and overall its a very interesting images. Its a great photo overall. I also enjoy the chess image, i agree that its a strong composition and it has a great feeling to it. It really looks like shes thinking and gives you this feeling that you are right there watching her. The final image isnt all that interesting to me but its still a good use of light. your self portrait has a really fun feeling and its very welcoming, i love it. Great job.

  5. Hi Jessie! I like the black and white effect as well. I think that really showcases the casting of light that you chose to use. I also enjoy the fact that the subject matter appears to be close family and friends, it makes it that much more meaningful. I like how you framed your second photo, it makes for a great composition as it's nice and tight with the focus being directly on the subject matter. The third photo is actually my favorite, I think it's a powerful photograph because of the perspective you chose to shoot it from. I do agree with Alex in that I wish it was cropped a little more on the left so that the highlight of the photo is the profile view of the man. It reminds me of a photograph taken in the 50s for some reason, with the quintessential father reading the newspaper on his recliner. Very cool! The first photo is beautiful as well, I love the expression you were able to capture and the way the model posed for you. I think the lighting shows great contrasts and castes interesting shadows. And of you course yourself portrait is adorable and playful! Nice job!

  6. Hey Jessie,
I love the black and white photos, they just add a whole new dimension to what you can capture! Personally, my favorite photo is the third, I love the texture of the chair next to the texture of his skin, just a cool photo. His facial expression also made me chuckle a lot and the profile is lovely what with the shadow highlighting him from the back, I wish there was more contrast but it's almost nice that most of the colors are a gray.
Nonetheless, all of the photos are great and I think you captured your family (?) each in their own element/ showed us more than just their appearance through their poses. Like your mom (?) looks really nice and has that halo of light around her that all mothers have as a source of comfort. Overall, great job, these photos are fabulous and I cannot wait to see what you make of next week's assignment!
