Lauren G. Assignment #3

  1. Hi Lauren! I really enjoy your series of photos. I think in the first image you were definitely able to showcase a large DOF. The position you chose to stand in for this image allows the viewer to grasp the grand scale of the road and imagine that you are at the center of it. I also like the elongation of the roads, it makes me feel like they're never ending. I really like the second and third images as well, I think they were best. It is definitely clear that these are shallow DOFs. I think the second image is great because the focus is perfect as well as the crop. We clearly know what object to focus because of its clarity and how the background is sort of blurred. The third image is my favorite because it is so picturesque and ideal. You were able to capture a lady bug! I think the composition is spot on and the angle is a great shot. I would have maybe zoomed in a little more to show and focus the lady bug, but that's just a personal preference. And that is a beautiful self-portrait! Great job!

  2. Hi Lauren,

Some really fun explorations here. Your images are very playful and I enjoyed your technically exploration as well. Your first photo though I would have liked to see the horizon line straightened, it seems to be slightly unintentionally diagonal. I really liked how the tree on the right off balanced what would have been a very symmetrical composition making the composition much more dynamic. Your second photo is a really nice low depth of field. I really enjoyed the contrast of the red berries against the green leaves. technically, I would have liked maybe a half inch more of space around the leaf in the bottom right hand corner. Your cropping on the leaf is a little tight. The lady bug is very charming and great composition. I love the subtle angles that really are working behind the scenes here. You draw us in with the angle of the bench/wall and direct our eye to the lady bug with the stick cutting across your composition. the angle of the bench really makes a nice "third." the shadows also make this photo very dynamic. In your last photo I like how the angles of the tree and house symmetrically lead us to you. However your cropping does not makes sense how you shaved off your chin and the peak of your head. an extra inch above and below would make more sense and make for a stronger composition. Overall great work!

  3. Hey Lauren! Great work on this assignment! I love the large depth of field in the first image and the symmerty between the two lanes of traffic and red lights. Although they are at slightly different angels it gave the photo great balance. As for the next two I like the low depth of field and focus on the berries and the ladybug. Both contrast very nicely with the colors in the background and really draw you in. As for your self portrait I agree with Alex that I would have loved to see it cropped slightly less, but overall awesome work and keep it up!

  4. Great job on the assignment, you fulfilled the technical goals through the Large DOF as well as the two Shallow DOFs and your portrait. The colors are great and it seems like such a sunny day and the shadows are great. I like all of the reds contrasting the greens.
These photographs show great craftsmanship. I wish the first were straightened out but I like the image a lot. The second image is pretty and I like how the branch cuts through the image in such a strong way. The third image is great, and the lady bug is so subtle but a very interesting image to capture. You look very at home in the last image and happy to be out in the sun. I like the houses in the background too!
Overall, you made a strong visual statement about where you live. Great job!
