Garry Winogrand is one of the world's most influential street photographers and photojournalists, and his images are more than captivating. Winogrand was born and raised in none other than New York City, and found much of his influence and inspiration from the busting city scenes around him. He attended the City College of New York, then later transferred to Columbia University to pursue a career and degree in photojournalism. Winogrand took this and ran with it, and became who he is known for today.

Winogrand was infatuated with the mundane and grit of the everyday American lifestyle, whether it be riding the train, pushing through the crowded streets of New York, or talking at a payphone, he chose to capture it all with his Leica M4.

At the time he was actively shooting photographs, there were a lot of social and political movements going on. By documenting many of these events, Winogrand was doing us all a favor years later by recording these important and influential events in history that we might be able to relive and revisit them today.

Some of my favorite shots of Winogrand's are from his 'Animals' series. Not only are they fun, and super quirky, but they also can tell a lot about the surroundings, the time of day, etc. Winogrand's photographs remain as impactful and intriguing today as they did freshly developed in his day.

  1. Hi Alisa,

Congratulations on a job well done! It was smart of you to knock these credits out of the way. I really enjoyed your choice of Photographer. Each picture there is a dark humor sort of associated with it as well as a really enthralling contrast between whimsical subject and harsh contrast. Gary has an incredible way of capturing a moment as if he is not there, or a ghost, walking among the living. It is like his camera is hidden in his front pocket. He is a photographer that actually captures a moment. Whether it is a couple clinking glasses or a woman with her eyes rolled back in her head in ecstasy, each of these subjects are such an interesting moment in time. Not one person, in all the pictures you chose, is teh subject looking at the camera which brings us FURTHER into his pictures in a unique way, like we are sharing in the capturing of a secret moment of Garry's hidden camera.

  2. Hey Alisa,

Great job on your research paper! This photographer has a great sense of light and dark as well as capturing a moment. All of his pieces look genuine and not posed. I agree with what Alex stated above that none of these subjects are engaging with the camera, yet by their disassociation the viewer is more intrigued and brought in more. My favorite photograph would have to be the lady and the rhino dairyers. It just makes me chuckle in the dark twist of having a nice day at a zoo yet because the rhinos and the lady are on the same plane, it almost appears as if he is comparing the two. the rhinos stance, to me, mimics her glasses in a lovely way.
    Congrats on finishing this course!

  3. Hi Alisa,

I'm glad that you picked Winogrand as your research project choice. I remember seeing the fifth photo from Prof. Wojtanowski's examples in the PowerPoint. If you hadn't done this photographer for your research project, I probably would have never gotten to seen any of his photos. And after seeing what you have presented here, I would have really regretted it. I love how Winogrand captured these off guard moments where the viewer can catch the genuine smiles of some of the subjects. The third picture is my favorite out of the whole set. I love how each person is looking in different directions, and whatever they are looking at is making them smile. You did a great job in doing this project.
