DOF

  1. Hi Jonathan,

I think you fulfilled this assignment pretty well, but the Shallow DOF seems to be missing. What I would like to commend you on is your first two photos and your portrait. The first and second photo are great examples of large dof. The clear and wide span of the first photo is great, I can see everything in detail. I specifically like the placement of the sign and the car, it helps to lead the eye to look out toward the horizon. The curve of the road is nice too, it encourages the viewer to look at the photo completely. The second photo is my favorite out of the set. I love how the track seems to go on infinitely, the trees and poles on the side adding on to it as they go down in scale the further they are. I also like how the light doesn't completely come in, just in streaks and specific spots (mostly the trees); somehow it just gives the photo this calming, mysteriousness for me.
The third photo I'm sure was the shallow dof, where it has a close up focus of one solo subject and everything else is supposed to be out of focus behind it; but the way it is supposed to go seems to be reversed here. In this photo focus is clearly seen on the sign and the building behind it; then the car passing in front is taken out of focus and seems to be the only thing that is. A suggestion would be to have gotten closer to the sign so that the focus would just be on it, while the rest of the photo would have been out of focus.
Overall, however, you did a great job with the first two photos. They met the conditions of large dof completely. Then your self portrait is very simple and fulfills the requirement, which was simple itself. Even though the shallow dof was a little off, your photos are great and fulfill this assignment. I look forward to what you will show everyone next throughout this semester.

  2. You accomplished the technical aspects of this assignment very well and visually portrayed where you live. It looks similar to where I live in that it's suburbs but also so commercial what with the wawa and starbucks as well as the train tracks that connect people from one location to another.
I think the compositions are very strong. I really like the first photo, the colors and composition work really well together. The sense of depth in the first photo is really great also, and the cars illustrate it well from how close up to how far away they are. The train tracks are great too and it's a nice statement about nature vs. man with the tracks so inlaid in the forest and it feels very endless. I think the composition of the your shallow DOF photo could be stronger or maybe more intense lighting. Your self photograph is nice, but I wish either the whole thing were in focus or only one part and I am not quite sure how it relates to your other photos.
I think your create a strong visual statement about where you live. I like how you did not use any photographs only of your house thus showing just how much a town too is where a person lives. Overall great job!
