Lauren G., Self Portrait and Intro

Hello,

My name is Lauren. I'm part of the lucky few who have walked during the graduation ceremony but still need a few more credits to officially graduate (nice to know I'm not the only one). I major in psychology and am looking to get my doctorates in clinical psychology. A lot of my hobbies center around different forms of art, like drawing, painting, and photography (am really glad to have found this class). But the hobby I enjoy the most is drawing characters and making stories for them. I'm very proud of the characters I can create. The beginning and end of their stories swell me with joy! Then the plot that goes in the middle shames me into an internet binge. Maybe this photography class can create some inspiration for me. Really looking forward to the rest of this semester.

  1. As i am leying in bed writing this comment, your image makes me wish i could sleep right now. I also was one who walked and still hasn't officially graduated, but hey walking was cool i guess haha anyway your image makes me feel like your always busy and want to just take some time to sleep where ever you car, i feel you on that one the background really makes me think i am trying to figure out where you might be, but theres not enough detail to let me know so its very centric on you sleeping, so i think thats cool how the image make you look more into it.

  2. Hey Lauren, nice to meet you and congrats on graduating! I was a major in psychology too before I transferred, it's such an interesting topic. That's so cool about drawing and your characters, you definitely should incorporate some into your work because I would love to see them!

So from your photo the first this I see is your face, most likely sleeping, resting on your arm on a counter top. Clearly you are exhausted and tired, probably from all the crazy events and what not before graduating as well as just in general school. I see books in the background which further make me think of school and the reason as to why you are dozing, you did not even have time to take your glasses off before you fell asleep so once again that reiterates that you are exhausted.
I like the color and how you set up the photo and I can see from your screen shot you took a lot of time to find the perfect pose of you sleeping! I think the overhead light and the shadows create a very nice image, and including your hand in the piece was a nice touch and I can see you are someone who takes the time to do your nails and, unlike me, takes care not to rip the paint off within the first few hours! The reflection on the counter top is cool, and it might have been interesting to see what would have happened if you could get more of your face reflected as well!
Great job overall, I think you definitely followed and satisfied the assignment. The only changes I might suggest would be seeing what this would have looked like in black and white as well as removing that object on the far right and then sliding the camera to the right more, because, for me, seeing your shirt does not necessarily add to the piece and maybe seeing more books and the specific titles might have. But once again great job and I look forward to seeing more of your photos!

  3. Hi Lauren! I can really relate to your photograph right now as I am extremely tired. I enjoy the angle and point of view this photo as it's an interesting perspective. It's almost as if the viewer is laying down right beside you, due to the level you shot it at. You created a lot of depth which I like because it makes the photo more fascinating. Your image reminds me of the relentless nights I'm sure we've all had, studying at a Starbucks or something. I think the aspect of being able to relate to the emotion your are conveying in this image makes me like this photo even more. I too agree with Clarke and would maybe crop some of your shoulder out so that the focus is more on you. However I love this photo and how it's shot at eye level!

  4. Hi Lauren!
Yes you are not alone! I too walked at graduation and need two more courses to get that diploma!
I love the thoughtfulness of this photo and I think that clearly reflects who you are. It is very posed but that in no way weakens your message because despite being posed there is a sincerity to your facial expression that really captivated me. Working with some great angles, you lead the viewers eye right to yours as they lay tired on the table? Bar? not sure and to me it doesnt matter – but what is clear is you are tired. formally, and we will learn about this, I would have liked to have seen the exposure corrected (your lighting is very yellow due to the indoor nature of lights. I dont think the yellow lighting was intentional but again a minor detail tat you will learn more about. I also very much enjoyed sneaking in some books into your background and again I think little by little you reveal bits and pieces about you. I look forward to seeing more of your solutions!

  5. Hello Lauren.
Your photo shows how tired you are from all the hard work that goes into graduation. I do have to ask why a person with such creativity, and a love of drawing is getting a doctorate in psychology? Congratulations on you getting the chance to walk. I know a lot of people who came through those doors, but didn't get that opportunity. i like your hand in the photo, and the fact that your nails are done. I like how there are things that are in your picture that are not in focus. I love photos like that. When there are things so clear, and then there other things that we can't make out. Your photo shows me that you will work until you fall asleep, just don't work so hard that you miss that you don't enjoy the fruits of your labor.
