Clarke Godfrey

Hey Everyone!

So a little bit about me, my name on all offical documents is Emma but I go by Clarke, my middle name. I recently transferred from Occidental College out in Los Angeles to Temple due to a family emergency that required me to be a bit closer to home. I believe I am a Junior but honestly I have no idea because I also ended up switching my major from Psychology to Visual Studies.
Truthfully, photography intiminates me a little bit, but that might also be because I have never taken a photography class. Nonetheless, I am excited to finally learn about photography through this class!
When I am not taking three summer classes for both sessions I can be found either at one of my two jobs, excersising (I work at a spinning place), hanging with friends, or, and this is my personal favorite, switching between sitting on my bed and sitting on my couch watching netflix (I can fake it but I am a pretty big introvert).

  1. Hey there Clarke. I just got back from LA a couple months ago from studying away, I miss it. Philadelphia definitely has it's perks though, like functional public transportation and biker friendly. Regardless, your photo is awesome I think so don't be intiminated :). I think that technically this is a great photo with really interesting composition. The way the soft shadows boarder parts of your frame and move around the blanket is like a hypnotic spiral down yo tour eyes/face. I really like your choice to bundle up making the covers the foreground and your eyes the background. I am immediately focused on your eyes since they are center frame but am completely aware of everything else. I am left wondering since you mentioned you go between Netflix on your couch and your bed, which blanket the one in the photo comes from and if you were watching Netflix before this picture. I don't know if it was intentional, but it feels like this photo links with your introduction.
The message I decode from the content of the photo is that your a playful person maybe somewhat shy, and that you feel the need for security. Your eyes are engaging the viewer but could be either playful or shy. If you were to wrinkle your brow in anyway, the message would have been more clear. Drawing from your into and you calling yourself an introvert I assume it's sort of both. Since you picked this one from many of your screenshot-ed choices I assume that you wanted to stay a little more hidden as to exactly who you are and it was the introvert that chose this. I feel that you definitely completed the assignment and did it very well.

  2. Hey Clarke, i love the image. when reading about you i would never see you as and introvert you seam fun! and i think your image does a great job a showing that. it feels very playful yet shy at the same time like Luke said. Its like you want to come say hi but your scared to come out. I enjoy the lighting and how part is shadowed it makes the like coming in look like its trying to bring you out form uner the covers like pulling you towards it. Its a great picture dont be scared of this class!

  3. Hi Clarke! I think this is such a cool image, I love how the blanket frames your eyes in an interesting organic shape. I think your photo also looks like it's drawing the viewer in because the blanket almost makes a pattern that leads the viewer's eyes right to yours. I think the crop is nice because it creates a balanced shot, the top, bottom and sides all seem equal. I am in the same boat as you, photography intimidates me a lot because I have no prior or proper experience in taking photographs. Taking one of myself is probably the most daunting task.

  4. This is undoubtedly one of the more interesting solutions. Compositionally it is very strong. The folds and wrinkles in the sheets flow directly to your eyes, which clearly are the focal point. I am sorry to hear about your family emergency, and wish the best for your situation. Philly is a great town with a lot to enjoy so take advantage of the good parts. I love how the one fold of the sheet frames your bottom eye – well done. You definitely played with photography before judging by the quality of your images. Your exposure is excellent as well. I really love the almost monochromatic feel of this picture. The blue of your eyes and the blues of the sheets creates an overall monochromatic feel which I am a huge fan of.
I think the message is clear as several have pointed out that there is a part of you that you are unwilling to reveal. This could be something you do not want to reveal to yourself, others or both. Your eyes are playful and inviting despite the overall theme of mystery. Great job!

  5. Hello Clarke! I hope you are enjoying Temple so far! It's an awesome school and being in an urban setting is great for inspiration and expression. I really like the image you chose for your self-portrait. The first thing that caught my eye was your eyes! The color of the blanket compliments your blue eyes very well and created a natural frame. The blanket also gave the picture a lot of texture and the folds and creases allowed for great contrast between light and dark areas. You also mentioned in your intro that you are a bit of an introvert. I think this picture alludes to that in a way with you hiding under the covers and only exposing a small part of your face. I don't know if this was intentional or not but I liked the parallel. Great work and I look forward to checking out more of your photos!

  6. Hey Clarke! Really cool self-portrait, the composition makes your eyes and the upper portion of your face the focal point, with makes for a strong connection with the viewer. The blue color of the blanket also makes your eyes pop, and gives off a striking yet organic effect. The choice to cover almost all of your face also makes the picture a bit mysterious and androgynous. Which leaves the viewer wanting to know more. Your eyes are really powerful and beautiful, and I loved that you chose to concentrate on them. Overall, I think you did a great job, and your self-portrait is very impactful.

  7. Hello Clarke. I see dead people is the first thing i thought of when i saw your photo. What, or who are you hiding from? Your blue eyes stand out, they show a strength that lies underneath the sheet. I'm sorry that you had to come back to Philly in such circumstances, but you seem to be handling your business. I wonder where you got the idea o just show us your eyes? Are they your favorite feature, or are you really hiding from us or someone. Either way it makes your photo stand out form the rest. I cant wait to see what other ideas you come up with in the future, because your photo sparks so many ideas in my head. I also like the way the sheet looks like a tunnel drawing me into your eyes, like there is no escape.

  8. Hi Clarke, nice to meet you! I really like how in this image, we see your face, like a typical self portrait, but the way you chose to only show a portion of your face is very interesting, and leaves the viewer to wonder why we only see a portion of the subject. Like many others' comments, I also like the way you framed your face with the cloth, which also creates a nice negative space, but doesn't take away from the main focus of the image. The color shift in the material really accents the colors in the face, and allow the focus to be primarily on the eyes. Even in some of the other photos you have in your screen shot, I see that you have a strong emphasis on the composition of the photo, and the space around the subject that help to tell the story and allude to the mood and idea around the image itself. Great photos!

  9. Hi Clarke,
First I would like to talk about the color. Blue can be a very soft color such as the bed blankets that you are wrapped in. Then your eyes remind me of some sort of ocean color. I heard a paint said once "the most Beautiful thing is two colors unbearable close in scale right next to one another. I don't know if you thought about this much. With that said I think the shot would be better if it was closer to your face. That would build tension or empathy even.
I am very sorry that you had to move away from LA to come back to the east coast. Yet I hope that using some camera tools around the city will in fact lighten the experience.
Tyler is a great school and I am also a Visual studies major. I think the program is growing in a great way.
