Assignment 2: Capturing Motion

  1. Hey Clarke, I know exactly where these shots were taken! I used to live on Park Avenue between Dauphin and York, say hello to Mr. Rick at USA Beer for me :). I really enjoy the picture of the military kids in squad formation. I especially like the decision you made to shoot them from outside the fence. The fence has a lot of meaning to me in this shot. There is also so much going on with the students and other people in this photo. I think that you hurt yourself however, by making the frame so wide, and including the bar of the fence in your frame. I'm thinking you may have been walking by the fence to get this picture and that's why the fence was so blurred. I really liked how the fence makes you wonder if the viewer is being kept out or if the students are being kept in. The child bending down to tie his shoelace, and the kid with a hand on the shoulder is a great contrast to the formation of the squad. It shows an innocence compared to the discipline that engulfs the image. The other 2 shots I feel could have been stronger. I like the chaos of the moving car, the multiple texts of signs, street lamps, signs, buildings and then the very still man looking like he is confused maybe questioning his whereabouts, but because the car is the only thing moving it doesn't really convey a very strong moment. It's not a moment or a perspective that captures a time that we don't normally see in a way we see this very often all the time. The third picture I would have liked to see at least one part in focus to give more of a contrast of the images. I like the leaves included in your frame they add an extra detail that I associate with wind, which i build in my head attributing to the blurred image of the man and the brick wall. It's like he is blowing in the wind. Overall, I think you completed this assignment well.

  2. i also enjoy the image of the military kids and your choice to shoot them outside of the fence, my only issue is i feel like you could had waited for them to move a little bit more, they are kinda just standing in a group and not moving, it could had been cool to wait till they were marching of doing something involving movement. I feel you really captured movement in the last image ant i almost seams like you were rushing to take the picture because you didn't want him to see, i like the wall in the background because it shows his movement and gives it a city feel. The middle image may had been a bit cooler during rush hour when there were a ton of cars moving and show the rush of the city with people everywhere and cars moving around. overall i feel like you captured interesting moment all around the city and where temple is and where you live. good job

  3. Without any captions ofcourse the viewer creates their own story. The first picture is very cool because the only people you can really see the front of is the faculty. The rest are close in a circle with no ones uniform actually visible. What would be a statement of that Photo, of youth, of discipine? I am guessing they are military? Either way this photo is mind provoking and erie even.
The second photo is really great. This project in many ways was about comparing time scales, and with the human and the car there is that comparison. I always wonder about permission with photos of people.

  4. I really enjoy the urban theme of your photos. There is a real unfiltered grit about them all, and the essence of North Philly is really captured. I agree with the first comment that I would have liked to see the group of young men in uniform moving around more. It was a cool concept to shoot through the fence though. The second picture is by far my favorite. I like the motion of the vehicle in contrast to the man standing on the corner. Although he is not moving there is an anticipation of what his next movement will be. It is also interesting that he is looking at something off camera, leaving the viewer wondering what is approaching that is out of the frame. A bus? Another person? It's thought provoking. As for the last picture I really enjoyed this one as well. I think maybe a different angle would have given it some more depth, but I understand when shooting what I'm guessing was a stranger you were limited to options. I do like that he is slightly blurred and you can really get a sense of his stride and swag. Overall, great job!

  5. I really appreciate that you kept the theme of showing your surroundings. The first picture is interesting because you chose to include the fence as a part of your piece. The only problem I found with that was the pole in the image. I feel as if it distracts from the photo and interrupts the subjects you were trying to capture. I really like your second picture because the background is in motion but the stationary subject becomes the focus of the piece. I thought this was an artistic approach to the assignment to have the motion occur more in the background. I wish that the car was slightly more blurred to create more of an emphasis on the motion, but there's nothing you can do about slow drivers! The scenery of the third picture is intriguing, but the extreme blur of the walking man and unfocused background make it difficult to look at. Maybe if the background was more in focus then the moving subject would have that motion blur, but I feel as if it is not as strong as the previous two photos. Awesome job capturing the everyday life of Philadelphia!
