Brandi Asselin, Assignment #2 Motion

  1. Hello Brandi, nice to meet you. That's a pretty girl you got there. I'm a big dog enthusiast and you will probably see mine up here very soon. Anyway I think you did a really good job on the first photo to convey motion, but I think the bottom two photographs missed the bar a little bit. The top one shows a frame of your pup playing with I don't know what, but you showed what he looked like for a second in that duration of time that I don't believe can be captured with the human eye to hold onto. This photo really froze that moment well and I can tell this because the dog seems to be mid trot, his head at an angle that suggests he's about to do the death thrash with his toy, and his toy is blurred which suggests motion. The bottom two the dog seems to be at rest, or posing for the camera which doesn't make me think he was in the process of a motion. If you want to get a motion shot of your dog I think you need to unknown to him force him into motion like in the first one. Playing, is a good one, eating could be another, and I've got some really good ones with my dog and a laser-pointer if you want to see a lot of motion. Overall, I think you completed the assignment with the first picture.

  2. I love all of these images, maybe because i love dogs i'm not sure. I especially enjoy the second image of her on her back, the angle is awesome and it seams like she's just loving life. i feel like you did a great job capturing the care fee life of a dog and how they just enjoy everything and are always happy. the third one is also great how you just focused on here and the res is blurred out so all you really look at is the dog. While i enjoy the last image i don't feel like it shows movement quite as well at the top two, its more of a portrait of her. Overall i really enjoy the series and think it does a great job at showing her just having a great time outside and enjoying the weather.

  3. I enjoy these images as well! I love when someone is able to capture the movement of a dog because I sometimes feel like they move so fast. The second photo is my favorite because I love the perspective of being on the ground and taking a picture. You were able to freeze a moment of enjoyment in time of your dog. I also think it's balanced really well in terms of the crop and positive and negative space. I think the first photo is the best example of motion because you were able to capture your dog physically playing and moving, and I think it's at a great distance because you can see what your dog is doing and the environment he or she is in. I too agree that the last photo is more of a portrait shot than a motion shot, but still a great photo nonetheless. Overall, I really enjoyed that you were able to capture the spirit of your dog, it's such a happy series! I think you definitely completed the assignment in the first and second photo.

  4. Hi Brandi!

It is clear you really enjoyed taking these pictures. Your dog? Is awesome! As far as movement the first and second picture really capture the idea of a snapshot of something in motion, as opposed to capturing a natural pause. I think the third picture feels more of a moment, or a pause, then a snapshot of movement. I think your most successful photo is the middle one. I really appreciate that you got down low, to the dogs eye level, to really capture that moment of your dog flipping around in pure joy. Compositionally, it would be nice to have a little more space around the dog maybe a half inch of grass space to really zip our eye to the dog. Great depth of field with your second two photos. I love how you really command our eye to appreciate the dog. The last picture does really feel more still then a moment in motion but nonetheless a very successful and beautiful composition. Really look forward to seeing more work !

  5. Beautiful dog. I like how each photo captures the dog in different times in his play. The last pic stands out the most to me. You capture the dog when he looks as if he is about to pounce or chase something or someone. You can see his focus, and you captured it. His fur color stands out as well. The black, gray, and white swirls give great contrast to your pics. And I guess you know that you can never fail with photos of your dog, or family pet. The love that they receive seems to always come through in the pics, just as yours do. I like the fact that you kept the subject matter consistent, but separate in the action.

  6. Hi Brandi,

These photos are beautiful. I love how crisp and clear each of them are, all of them a great photo of such a beautiful dog. You did a good job in capturing moments of motion in the first two photos, the dog preparing to shake/pull at the toy and roll/wiggle around in the grass. The first one especially gives good detail of how the dog is getting ready to whip the toy around, his/her head preparing to to make its quick snaps and turns.
As much as I love the last one ( I really like the out of focus clothes in the background; a nice source of color) I can't tell if there is motion happening. Her/his head turned gives the inclination that something drew her/his attention which could be the motion depicted in this photo; but it could just as easily be her/him resting with her/his head in that position.
Overall, however, I feel you completed this assignment. You captured in great detail moments of motion in the dog as she/he plays in the backyard. I'm looking forward to what you will show next for the rest of the semester.
