Christine Wallet

Hey everyone, my name is Christine Wallet. I'm and Advertising design major here at temple. I just walked in graduation but I need to finish this class along with two others right now then I am done for good! Yay! I am currently interning full time at D4 creative and that's where I spend most of my day. I have bounced all around when it comes to school, I spent two years at Bloomsburg University, then a semester at community college, then ended up here at Temple and just finished up my third semester....so I am kinda graduating on time. I have always had an interest in photography just never really had time to get into it as much as I wanted to. I have an amazing family and as much as i love living in the city ill still end up back in bucks county, its just to pretty not to. I am one for taking one to many tasks at one time, this summer session being a prime example, taking three online classes and working full time, not my best choice. I like staying busy almost as much as I like having free time, its a constant struggle. Juts six more weeks and my diplomas on its way! I cant wait to create some cool things this semester and see what everyone comes up with!

  1. Hey there Christine, nice to meet you! Congrats on graduating (or almost after all of these classes!). I too am taking three classes for the first session and I have no idea how you do that as well as intern full time!

Based on your facial expression, specificall the raised eyebrows and widened eyes, I see a mixture between excitement and nervousness. Those feelings may relate specifically to this class, or maybe just to your current hectic but exciting schedule as you get closer and closer to becoming a college graduate. From your screenshot, I grasp that you choose to make your face the focus of the assignment and incorporate no detail, which causes the central, and only, focus point for the viewer to be your facial expression. As a self portrait assignment this is nice, but it leaves little else for the viewer in terms of trying to discern what exactly you are trying to convey about yourself besides your ambiguous facial expression. I think, though, if you wanted your face to be the focus point it would have been cool to zoom in more so the viewer can only see your face!
The black and white is very nice and classy! However, I wish there was more of a contrast with tones, that might have given your piece a more dramatic edge, which would have been cool because right now all of your colors are near a middle gray, but tone can be used to display emotions and what not, so that might have helped with the emotions you are trying to convey!
Overall, I believe you fullfil the assignment's technical aspect in regards to incorporating the prompts of the assignment into your work. I can see from your screen shots you spent a lot of time finding the right facial expression! I just believe the composition could have been slightly stronger if you zoned in further on only your face as well as varied the lights and darks which would have given a more dramatic element to your piece. Once again these are just my thoughts, but great job and I look foreward to seeing more of your work!

  2. Hi Christine!! I am also an advertising major (woop woop!) and I could have walked at graduation but forgot to sign up! I have this class along with another elective to finish up during summer I. I really enjoy your facial expression, I see a bit of playfulness and as Clarke stated anxiousness. I also agree with Clarke in that perhaps there could have been a sharper contrast in the black and white to further drive your expression home. Sharpening the contrast I think would've made you pop even more because this is a great photo!! I also maybe would have cropped a little more on the left side just to show you as the focus more and to make the picture even more balanced. But then again that may not have been what you were going for! I think this is a great shot and I'm excited to see more of your photos! And congrats to almost being done!!

  3. Hey Christine! I’m also an advertising major, and it was interesting to learn that you intern full time at D4, because I was just scanning the company to apply as a copywriting intern. I think your self-portrait says a lot about your personality, from the facial expression which translates a fun, quirky personality to the close proximity of the shot, which tells me you’re not afraid to have fun. Your hair and necklace are the accessories only accelerate this message, and give the photo a fun vibe. The choice to make the photo black and white shows that you have a sophisticated, serious vibe, and the choice to use this photo versus the many others in your screenshot shows you went out of your way to translate this message. I agree with the others, the a higher contrast would have made for a more dramatic self-portrait, and would have made the shadows around your hair and eyes pop more. Overall, this is great shot, and I can’t wait to see more!

  4. Hi Christine,
nice to meet you! I was very struck by your facial expression and had to comment haha. but first, formally, I agree with Courtney and Clarke on your cropping, It is a little distracting and does not feel wholly intentional your tight cropping on the right and even tighter cropping on the top. In the future, I would have kept the distance between the top of your head and the frame equal to the distance of the side of your hair on the right and the right frame. But that is the designer in me haha. I also would have liked to seen a sharper contrast and a more purposeful usage of black and white. what got me though was your expression and I think it closely relates to your intro paragraph! You certainly seem a little frazzled and also anxious. There's a certain "ok Here we go!" sort of look in your eye as you clicked the camera button. I really enjoyed that honesty. I liked your explorations covering up parts of your face but ultimately I enjoyed your chosen expression. I look forward to seeing how your work develops!

  5. Hi Christine,
This portrait really seems like you are giving the statement, here I am. Your expression also makes it feel like you are paying as much attention to the viewer as the viewer is paying attention to you. I really like the simplicity of this photo, you give the viewer exactly a self portrait of yourself that depicts simply you. Besides the slight facial expression of raised eyebrows and slight smile, the picture gives a sense of ambiguity which has its own charms to it.
I would have liked to seen a bit of more contrast in this photo, like others have mentioned. The shadowing in your hair around the edges of your face is nice, but the negative space behind you takes away from it. It makes everything blend into each other and keeps you from standing out more.
Though this is a beautiful photo, I'm not sure what you were trying to convey to the viewer. I'm sure there is more in your expression that you are conveying that I'm not getting right now. The expression kind of reads as if you are trying to say to the viewer that your are ready for something, but at the same time a bit nervous. It is a little too ambiguous for me to tell. The black and white help, however, to place attention more on your expression by taking attention away from color; so it helps to bring out some type of topic your are possibly trying to convey.
This is a simple photo but it is still a beautiful piece. I'm glad I got the chance to see it and am looking forward to what works you will have next.
