Christine Wallet, Assignment #2 Motion In Photography

  1. Some of my favorite photography is from these candid sort of moments that may not be right away categorized as exciting or art. I enjoy the honesty. I like most out of this selection is the canon ball one. I think the contrast between the wood sided shed and the lively character doing a cannon ball is my favorite aspect. I think even cropping out the rest of that photo could make an interesting one. This place seems like home for you and the people and animals important. The one of the boy shooting a basket ball is great as well that is in the photo set.
I think these photos would act as a great meditation to focus on what it is about this suburban life that is interesting or compelling. Most would have a hard time seeing the engagement. You engaged myself and I thought they were interesting.

  2. I love the colors in this photo, they make me think of a lovely summer day where all anyone wants to do is be outdoors! You captured the dog so beautifully running, I like how he is about to be fully in the air, but not quite yet, I think there is a nice dynamic in that decision to not have him (or her) fully off the ground. Also, you choose to put the dog in focus and all the other details out of focus which causes the viewer's eyes to immediately travel to the dog and not get caught up in what is happening behind with the truck or the mailbox. The angle works well because it is not too low but also not too high; however, just to experiment it might have been interesting to see what the dog running looks like from a ground perspective.
You captured a very critical moment in this basketball game. It is very nice to see the basketball still interacting with the net. In addition, I like how to choose to use an image where the boy is still hanging onto the hop as well as his victory while the other boy in the background is still trying to block him. The heights of the boys reminds me of the AT&T sign for service and it's cool to see in your image. You choose an interesting angle that adds to the element of movement that you captured, like you captured it spur of the moment, but it might have been interesting to play around with readjusting the rotation to see what the image then looks like!
I love the face of the boy jumping, it's such a vivid image and the viewer can almost hear the boy screaming cannon ball! It's like the moment right before the storm, everything in the background appears still and silent and in one moment everything is going to get soaked, very neat! The reflection from the pool is nice, but it might have been interesting to play around with showing the boys reflection as well!
Great job, I think you definitely satisfied this assignment and also just did a great job of capturing the elements of a summer day in suburbia (like what Elliot said above)!

  3. These pictures remind me of the american dream/family photos. They are all very nice and freeze each moment very well. I love anything with dogs so I may be biased by saying I like the top one the best, but I do think that is your best photo. I think the framing is great, but I would have liked to see something different than the truck in the background, like woods or a house. The truck makes me think it was not intentional. I know that Collies are a very quick breed so it must have been pretty hard to catch him in that stride, but it definitely made him seem like he is moving very fast especially with the blurred background. The basketball game also has a interesting view because the photo's contents seem to be shrinking or growing depending if your eyes are moving left to right or right to left. I think this is a very interesting composition to have the smallest of the kids go to the larger of the kids. The third photo I think is a great moment to capture, I think an angle with less clutter in the background would have been better. I would have also liked to see some blur in the background to guage how fast he is going maybe, A blurred motion would have been a nice style to dramatize his pending cannonball. I think that once he was hitting the water maybe half submerged would have been another fun shot to play with. Great job, and you absolutely completed this assignment.

  4. I really enjoyed the images you chose! There was definitely a running theme, very summertime and outdoorsy which allowed the bright greens and blues of the landscape to stand out. The picture of the dog was really an excellent shot, with the hand legs still on the ground and front legs off the ground. It really captured his/her motion and effortlessly flowed in contrast to the stationary background. As for the other two photos, I enjoy how the second one had a staggering effort. Each of the boys distance off the ground increased in ascending order, which I found really pleasing to the eye (Like mentioned above...the AT&T sign haha). The last photo was really fun as well, and I love the facial expression on the boys face. My only suggestion here would have been to declutter the background a bit and just focused in on the subject and the pool, but other than that I have no complaints about an epic cannonball picture. Great work!

  5. I love these photos! It gives me such a feeling of happiness because I feel like they are the quintessential images for summer. These most definitely characterize motion because each subject matter is doing an action that you were able to capture. I especially like the last photo because it leaves me with a sense of anticipation-how will the subject matter fall and will he make a big splash? It's amazing too in the last photo because it's very balanced, even with the color scheme, it's mostly cool colors. I also like the slightly angled perspective of the second photo, I think it helps dramatize the slam dunk. The only suggestion I would make is to crop some of the background of each photo so that the subject in motion is more apparent and the focus. All in all, I like that you were able to capture these fun moments, because I feel that sometimes people take for granite the little joys in life such as these.

  6. I enjoy the clarity and straightforwardness in each photo and the colors are stellar... like everyone said, it's making me with I was not in Philly, but at home in the 'burbs, chillin' in my backyard. Choosing to capture a moment in the series of motion is interesting to me, and it implies that individual moments are very important to you, more so than the whole blur of events. It's cool how the viewer can see all the details of the subject and the surroundings, but still understand what motion is being implied in each image. Great shots!

  7. Christine,

Some really fun explorations here! You really paid attention to subject and composition here excellent work. Your first image captures the beautiful stride of your dog? This is an excellent example for how photography can literally stop time. I think the anticipated movement in both the dogs face and fur make this shot quite interesting. The second image again does the same thing, defining that moment of victory for the young boy, really nice. Compositionally I don't think it is as strong as your other two photos or capturing the fleeting moment of your other too.
This is a shit that has been in newspaper sports headlines, a shot we are very familiar with, the slam dunk. In this context it is interesting though and very jovial and light. Your last image is most successful and has a strong composition. The anticipation is beautifully captured with the calm blue water that will soon be in teetotal disrupt. I can tell you had fun taking these which is what photography is all about! Excellent work.

    Alex
